‘The King Woman’ debuts at the top of the box office

“The Woman King,” a new film starring Oscar-winner Viola Davis, debuted dominating the domestic box office. The film grossed $19 million from 3,765 North American theaters over the weekend, arriving at the higher end of expectations in its first weekend in theaters.

The film is followed by Zach Cregger’s “Barbarian”, which grossed US$6.3 million, and Ti West’s horror Pearl, which closed the podium after registering US$3.1 million from 2,934 venues. “See How They Run,” starring Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan, with $3.1 million from 2,400 North American theaters., and Bullet Train, with $2.5 million from 2,602 theaters in its weekend of release, complete the Top 5 of the weekend.

On CinemaScore, “The Woman King” earned an “A+,” the platform’s highest score. The feature film directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood tells the story inspired by real events that happened in Dahomey, West Africa, from the 17th to the 19th centuries. And it shows how Nanisca (Davis), leader of the group of female warriors, and her daughter Nawi (Thuso Mbedu) fought against their enemies who enslaved and tried to destroy their village.
