The incident happened during Saturday’s (16) match against Bournemouth for the Premier League. The game was subsequently abandoned and will be rescheduled. Luton released a statement to confirm that Lockyer was released from the hospital.

“We are thankful to report that our captain Tom Lockyer has now begun a period of rehabilitation from the comfort of his own home after he was discharged from hospital on Wednesday”.

The team also announced that the defender was fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator – a small device used to treat people with dangerously abnormal heart rhythms.

“This encouraging news follows a successful procedure that took place on Tuesday whereby Tom had an ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator) device fitted to prevent a repeat of Saturday’s incident”, said the statement.

Lockyer had already had a surgery to correct an atrial fibrillation, after he collapsed during Luton’s Championship play-off final win against Coventry in May. But the team said in their statement that this issue was “different from the atrial fibrillation”.
