In a speech at the White House, he declared: “I want to assure our allies, the American people and the people of Ukraine that they can count on our support. We will not abandon them.” Biden emphasized the “overwhelming urgency” of gaining congressional approval for a new aid package for Ukraine in the coming days and weeks in the face of the Russian invasion.

On Saturday night, Congress reached a last-minute deal to avoid a shutdown of federal services in the United States, but that deal did not include new aid to wartime Ukraine, the result of a compromise between Republicans and Democrats.

The Democratic president criticized Republicans and urged House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (Republican) to avoid another shutdown impasse when this new 45-day emergency agreement expires.“I’m exhausted from risk politics,” Biden declared in the White House’s Roosevelt Room. “This situation needs to end. There shouldn’t be another crisis.”
