President Joe Biden criticized this Tuesday (13) comments about NATO made by his likely electoral opponent in 2024, Donald Trump, calling them “dangerous” and “un-American”.
With that, at the White House, the Democrat harshly rebuked Trump’s comment made over the weekend, questioning the US’s willingness to support members of the Western defense alliance if they were attacked.
Biden said Trump’s comment makes it more urgent for Congress to approve his long-stalled request for funding to support Ukraine’s defense against Russia.
“The stakes were already high for American security before this bill passed the Senate last night,” he said. “But in recent days, this risk has increased. And that’s because the former president sent a dangerous and shocking signal to the world.”
It is worth remembering that on Saturday (10), Trump complained during a political rally in South Carolina about what he called “delinquent” payments by NATO members and recounted what he said was a past conversation with the head of “a large country” about a potential attack by Russia.
“No, I wouldn’t protect him. In fact, I would encourage them (Russia) to do whatever the devils want. You have to pay,” Trump told the unnamed leader.
Thus, in statements calling on Republican President Mike Johnson to bring a $95.34 billion military aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan to a vote in the House of Representatives, Biden said of Trump’s comments: “For For God’s sake, it’s stupid, it’s shameful, it’s dangerous, it’s un-American.”
Biden also said that not supporting the financing of the war in Ukraine would be equivalent to supporting Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding that his attacks could move beyond Ukraine’s borders into Europe.
