The United States Supreme Court ruled in favor, on Monday (22), of President Joe Biden’s government in allowing the cutting or removal of the barbed wire installed by Texas on the border with Mexico to deter migrants.

As a result, tension between Texas, governed by Republican Greg Abbott, and the federal government has increased in recent months, particularly as the November presidential elections approach.
Furthermore, the governor, a supporter of former Republican President Donald Trump, has placed barbed wire at the border, prevented federal agents from accessing some sectors and sent migrants on buses to cities governed by Democrats.
In December, a federal appeals court barred the Border Patrol from destroying barbed wire installed by Texas near the city of Eagle Pass on the Rio Grande (called the Rio Bravo in Mexico) unless it warranted a medical emergency.

Texas took the opportunity to install more barbed wire without waiting for the ruling from the Supreme Court, with a conservative majority, on an emergency appeal filed by the Department of Justice.
By a very tight result of five votes in favor (the three progressive and two conservative magistrates) and four against, the court accepted the government’s appeal.
The December sentence “is annulled”, the court decision reads.
However, the decision is not yet final. The dispute over whether Texas has the right to install barbed wire at the border continues.
