Tottenham midfielder James Maddison has withdrawn from the England squad due to an ankle injury.

Maddison suffered the injury during Tottenham’s 4-1 defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League on Monday (6). With the injury, the midfielder will miss the Euro 2024 qualifiers in November.

England will play Malta on Friday (17), and three days later will travel to North Macedonia. Tottenham released a statement confirming the injury and adding that Maddison would “remain at Hotspur Way for rehabilitation with the club’s medical staff”. The statement does not clarify how long the midfielder is expected to be out of action. 

Maddison arrived at Tottenham from Leicester City in a £40 million deal in June. He scored three goals and made five assists in 11 Premier League games. He played five games for England. With this injury, he joins Tottenham’s list of unavailable players, along with Micky van de Ven, Manor Solomon and Ivan Perisic.
